"Suffering has been stronger than all other teaching, and has taught me to understand what your heart used to be. I have been bent and broken, but — I hope — into a better shape." — Charles Dickens, Great Expectations |

Do you find sex and relationships challenging to navigate? If feelings and needs were never discussed in your home growing up, you might not feel safe expressing them now. As a result, trust and empathy may be difficult for you. I understand through my own childhood and inter-generational trauma how confusing and scary intimacy can be. More than anything learned in school, experience has been my greatest asset in my approach to therapy. I will work as hard as you do to help navigate the complicated feelings and challenges in your life. Are you struggling with significant changes or transitions and feeling stuck? Is it difficult to feel optimistic? To understand where you are right now, it’s necessary to look back at where you came from. Our work helps you discover how, without realizing it, past connections (with family, teachers, friends, etc.) impact relationships in the present. I have worked with military veterans in the VA system who struggle with existential issues, trauma, and substance abuse, as well as those struggling with their sexuality. My clients sometimes find it helpful to explore cultural narratives. Societal expectations, along with porn, social media, television, music, etc, can distort our thinking and influence the stories we create about ourselves and our place in the world. I aim to help my clients develop self-compassion. That is, the ability to treat oneself the same way one might treat a loved one, with patience, compassion, and yes, love. Together, we will help you move closer to the person you want to be. |
