Your therapist will strive to create a safe and open environment so you can explore your current problems. The SAT Project therapists seek and receive consultation from one another in order to draw on the group’s collective wisdom, expertise, depth of professional knowledge, and treatment experience. While you will work directly with one therapist, you will have a team working for you.
What is a consultation? A consultation is an initial meeting in which you and the therapist work to decide upon the best course of treatment (i.e. weekly treatment, more frequent sessions, combined treatment, and/or couples treatment).
How often do we meet? Most of what we do is individual therapy, at least once a week. Some therapists will prefer to work with you more frequently. Some of our therapists suggest combined treatment, which is individual as well as group therapy and/or Couples therapy. All of that depends on the presenting difficulties you are looking to resolve.
What types of therapy might be suggested? Our program provides individual, couples, family, and group psychotherapy. Our affiliated therapists are trained in all modalities. The type of treatment suggested would be based on your needs and is determined through consultation.
What are the therapy sessions focused on? Therapy is focused on your family and social history, which we call "the narrative". This is your story about how you developed certain life challenges. We believe that people are often working to solve issues related to their narrative and that sometimes those solutions become problems in and of themselves. New solutions must be found. Therapy works to do this.
What are the goals of therapy? To create an environment for self-examination where a non-judgmental exploration of one’s narrative can occur. We work to uncover outdated modes of relating that may have more to do with your past than your present. In doing so, we create a mindset that is based in curiosity and interest about your own behavior, thoughts, and feelings. Once we help you gain more awareness and connection to your feelings, we help you to use your feeling states to discover more of what you need and what to do to get those needs met in ways that feel esteem enhancing. We work hard to reduce shame and replace it with interest and more positive feeling states. In this process, we work towards helping you break away from the tyranny of your history and restore a sense of love, creativity, and play.
Will my partner attend therapy with me? If you decide on individual treatment, you will attend therapy alone. You and your therapist may decide to invite your partner to a session from time to time, but the work is focused on you. If you are a couple seeking treatment, we will often assign one therapist to each partner and then hold a second session every week or two where both therapists and the couple work together. This creates safety and support for both partners. We have found that this approach is most grounding, productive, and facilitates constructive communication about difficult and painful situations.
